Rotary, Township partner to plant pocket forests

Roger Varley, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

The Township of Uxbridge has announced it will partner with the Rotary Club of Uxbridge to install two more mini forests in town.

Rotary installed the first mini forest at the Fields of Uxbridge last year. It now plans on installing somewhat similar forests called pocket forests. A mini forest is a densely planted area the size of a tennis court containing native trees and plants. Pocket forests are even smaller, usually the size of a few parking spaces.

The first project will see three pocket forests installed at the King Street Parkette, and the second project will create a new mini forest adjacent to the original at the Fields of Uxbridge

The site at the parkette will see preparation begin on June 21, and any residents interested in volunteering are encouraged to register at Eventbrite, at Pocket Forest Site Preparation @ King St Parkette. Preparation of the second Fields of Uxbridge mini forest will start on July 5, with registration available at Mini Forest 2.0 Site Preparation @ Fields of Uxbridge. Tree planting at the sites is scheduled for October and November. More details will be made available later.
