Guided walks a new feature on town trails

As the Trail Capital of Canada, Uxbridge’s trails are likely expected to offer something more than forests and paths. The Township of Uxbridge Trails Committee has recognized this and, in collaboration with the Uxbridge Urban Provincial Park, is launching a series of guided trail walks this summer.

According to a release from the Township, there are three of these guided walks planned, each with its own theme. Dates, times, and descriptions of each walk are provided below:

The first walk occurs on Tuesday, June 3, and will focus on “Tree ID. From 1 - 2 p.m. at the Uxbridge Countryside Preserve, participants will be invited to learn ways to identify trees by their bark, branching, buds and colouring.

The next outing takes place from 10 - 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 21. Entitled “Trail of the Ice Giants: Uncovering the Secrets of the Moraine,” walkers will explore the Oak Ridges Moraine in Uxbridge Urban Provincial Park and learn how the landscape, economy, urban development and social fabric of Uxbridge is shaped by the last ice age.

“Experience the moraine’s rolling hills and wooded valleys and learn about the earth beneath your feet in this 1.5 hour moderately-paced guided walk.”

The final planned guided walk takes place in the fall. On Saturday, October 4, from 10 - 11 a.m., trail trekkers can learn more about Trees and Invasive Species at the Uxbridge Countryside Preserve.

“Discover the trees and invasive species living throughout the Uxbridge Countryside Preserve.”

All of the walks are free, and pre-registration is required. For more information or to register for any of the walks, please email events@uxbridge.ca.

The Uxbridge Town Trails Committee oversees the development of new recreation trails and the maintenance of existing trails in the urban areas.
