Uxbridge resident Mike Macbeth is president of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of Canada. She shares that less than 250 Dandie Dinmont Terrier puppies are born annually world wide, and says concerns about the future of the ancient, endangered ‘Dandie’ are shared by all who cherish them.
To raise public awareness of the breed’s plight, Macbeth and other Dandie Dinmont Terrier clubs around the world have organized gatherings of Dandie Dinmonts. In various locations all over the globe, owners will simultaneously get together on the exact same day and hour (2 p.m. in their regional time zones) to celebrate this rare breed.
“World Dandie Dinmont Terrier Day is basically a call to arms, a symbol that Dandie people care, and want the breed to prevail,” says Macbeth.
Dandie lovers are planning events in 22 nations, beginning in Australia, westward across Asia and Europe, throughout England, Scotland and Ireland, and across the ocean to the United States and Canada, ending up at the Pacific coast.
“We expect 90 per cent of the world’s Dandie population to participate on June 6,” says Macbeth. “What other breed of dog can inspire such devotion and passion?”
Those curious about the Dandie Dinmont Terrier can watch the entire day of gatherings on Facebook @World Dandie Dinmont Day. There is more to learn about the breed from the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of Canada website dandiedinmont.org.
