Tigers show promise in exhibition game

It wasn't an actual game but a controlled scrimmage when the Uxbridge Secondary School Tigers faced their first opponents of the new football season, St. Andrew'sCollege from Aurora. There were no kickoffs or punts, no quarters, no changing ends and the length of the game was controlled by the officiating staff.

However, the Tigers showed some promise as they battled St. Andrew's to a scoreless tie.

With about 100 people gathered to watch, the Tigers' defence played a strong game, made notable by Sam Simbrow-Page's two pass interceptions and some hard tackles.

The offence, led by quarterback Evan Coughlin, gained more yards than their opponents, including Braden Davis' 16-yard run, but the passing game suffered. Opening the game, the Tigers made picked up a first down on their first two plays but then Coughlin was sacked for a 10-yard loss, Turning over the ball, the defence took the field and Simbrow-Page made his first interception on St. Andrew's first play.

Eloise Kock became the first girl to play football for the Tigers and, significantly, wore No. 1. However, she was only on the field for four offensive plays before the game ended.

The Tigers’ first regular game of the season will be their Homecoming game, under the lights at Tiger Field next Thursday at 7 p.m. when they will play O'Neill High School from Oshawa.
