Sharp-eyed spectators at last weekend's Santa Claus parade might have noticed the Uxbridge Legion Pipes and Drums Band had a new leader. Christine McKenzie was out in front of the pipes and drums for the first time as Drum Major.

McKenzie takes over the role from Lew Gregor, who said he was Drum Major for eight to 10 years. Gregor said he stepped away from the position because he wanted to get back to being a piper.

He said he became Drum Major after he was chosen for the job by the one before him. For McKenzie, she asked to take over after Gregor announced he was stepping down. Gregor said he has been training her for the position most of the year.

The Uxbridge Legion Pipes and Drums Band made its debut at the Zephyr Sports Day on June 29, 1968. The band has become a staple of the Santa Claus parade both in Uxbridge and others around the region, and is an essential part of Uxbridge's annual Remembrance Day observance. The band also offers lessons at no charge to those interested in learning both bagpipes and drums. For more information, visit uxbridgepipeband.com
