On Sept. 17, representatives from the LMMSO attended the 22nd Annual Region of Durham Accessibility Awards dinner in Oshawa. As one of eight award winners chosen from 41 nominees, the LMMSO was invited to this “sensory-friendly” event.
“It also gave us an opportunity to meet other recipients of the award and realize that there are some great things happening for accessibility, equity and inclusion in Durham Region,” says Melanie Whitfield, an active member of the LMMSO.
Whitfield says the award represented many years of working on a number of improvements that enable all visitors to the Leaskdale Manse National Historic Site to engage and enjoy what the site has to offer. These improvements include extending the sidewalk in front of the church to join with two existing sidewalks on each side of the church, leading to sculptor Wynn Walter’s “Maud in the Garden” statue; three outdoor panels placed at accessible levels explaining various historical themes pertinent to the site; a new entry door featuring push-button opening; and revamped interior entry space with an appropriate ramp and handrails.
The Township’s Accessibility Committee made the nomination for the LMMSO.
“This nomination recognizes your dedication, contributions, and commitment to advancing accessibility in your community,” said an email from the Region.
The LMMSO has been promoting Anne of Green Gables author Lucy Maud Montgomery and her life in Leaskdale for over 30 years.
“It is very heartening to realize that our efforts are indeed noticed. Recognition also serves to fuel continued projects and instills the fire to keep going,” says Whitfield.
Whitfield and the LMMSO thank Annie Dalton, creative consultant; Steve Bruce Construction; Wel-done Landscaping and The Flooring Barn for making the physical project a reality.
