Uxbridge Bruins on five-game win streak

Uxbridge Bruins forward Danny Thomakos had a productive weekend as the Bruins extended their winning streak to five games. Thomakos scored three goals and three assists in games against the Port Perry LumberJacks and the Scarborough Knights.

Last Friday's tilt against the LumberJacks saw the Bruins take a two-goal lead in the first period. Evan Gilbert deflected a shot from the blue line by Malcolm Robin on a power play, with Thomakos also getting an assist, and then Trent Nobes was assisted by Thomakos and R.J. Schmidt for the second goal.

The second period was drawing to a close when the LumberJacks hit the scoreboard but the Bruins added two more quick goals to take a 4-1 lead. Thomakos scored with assists going to Gilbert and Devin Hollands, followed by Jordan Fitger's marker, assisted by Cameron Meek and Darin Bain.

Port Perry scored in the middle of the third period from a melee in front of the Uxbridge net. As the period wound down, the LumberJacks pulled goalie Eamon Callaghan with two-and-a-half minutes left in the game. A rink-length shot by the Bruins missed the empty net by an inch, leading the visitors to put the goalie back in the game. But 15 seconds later, they pulled Callaghan out again, leading to Bain's empty netter, assisted by Hollands and Schmidt.

The Cosmos named Thomakos as player of the game for Uxbridge and gave the nod to Austin Fata of the LumberJacks.

On Sunday, the Bruins travelled to Scarborough to demolish the Knights 7-0, with two goals in the first period, one in the second and four in the third. Thomakos and Kyle Butt both had two goals and an assist in the game.

The Bruins now sit in third place in the seven-team Orr Division of the PJHL with seven wins, an overtime win and 2 losses. On Saturday, they travel to Little Britain to take on the Merchants.

The Bruins are back at the arena tomorrow (Friday) at 7:45 p.m., when they host the Knights.

‍ ‍Bear pause: Friday's game was started with a ceremonial puck drop by Mayor Dave Barton and Joanne Pollard as part of the Bruins' ongoing 50th anniversary season. Also, as part of the 50th season, kids under 12 can get a free puck for the nightly chuck-a-puck event and tomorrow (Friday) the Bruins are staging a Paint the Den Pink event in aid of breast cancer awareness (see page 14 for more details on this event). Coming up on Oct. 30 is the Bruins' Halloween night.
