In a report to council on Monday, Mayor Dave Barton proposed the installation of a floating dock in Elgin Pond.

Speaking to his report, the mayor said people like to get as close to the water as they can and a dock would be "a great little addition to the area."
In his report, Barton said a floating dock would enhance public use of the pond. He said an anonymous donor has offered to fund the installation, estimated at $25,000, at no cost to the township. The proposed dock would include an aluminum ramp with hinge sets, float, and removable pressure treated panels; two floating dock sections measuring 12 feet by 20 feet; an anchoring system; and delivery and installation as well as “additional signage and safety features.”
The report added that the township's insurance provider has been consulted to ensure all risk management and safety requirements are addressed.
When asked by a councillor where the dock would be located on the pond, the mayor pulled out his cellphone and held it up so that they could see his photo of the proposed location. Council approved the dock's installation.
The Cosmos asked if it was intended to be used by people wanting to swim in the pond. The mayor said swimming in the pond is not encouraged and the dock is not intended for that.
The Township's parks bylaw bans several activities in the park, including "Swimming or walking on ice-covered water."
Another report brought forward during Monday’s council meeting was from regional councillor Bruce Garrod. His report was seeking additional ways for Uxbridge to honour its veterans.
He noted that municipalities across the country have used poppies and other symbols on crosswalks, but pointed out that the crosswalks deteriorate and fade because of traffic, winter maintenance and so forth. He also ruled out similar treatment for a path or walkway somewhere in the township for the same reason.
Garrod recommended that staff work with the "Honour Them Well" veterans banner program and the Uxbridge Legion to explore an alternative permanent commemoration. He said that could include the installation of permanent banners or other durable features in public locations such as Elgin Park or Veterans Park, located adjacent to Elgin Pond, along Main Street South.
Council approved his recommendations.
