Disc golf coming to Quaker Common

In response to a request from the Uxbridge Optimist Club, council agreed Monday to allow the club to set up a disc golf course on Quaker Common. Disc golf (known to some as "Frisbee golf") allows players to use a disc and chain metal baskets to play a variation of golf.

Jamie Miller, manager of parks and trails, told council that he recommended setting up a nine-hole course, rather than the 18-hoe course the club wanted.

"It's a good starting point," he said. "Start small and see where it goes."

Regional councillor Bruce Garrod was opposed to the idea, pointing out that the course would be in competition with the commercial disc golf set-up at the Trail Hub. Councillor Todd Snooks countered that competition is always good for business. Mayor Dave Barton opined that the golf would "get people more active."

Council agreed with Miller's recommendation that the Township work with the Optimist Club on the costing, design and logistics of the course development and asked staff to come back with a report.
