Bruins can't beat the Blue Jays

At the arena last Friday, the Uxbridge Bruins earned their 13th straight win to start the season, but they couldn't make it 14 the following night, as their trip to face the Little Britain Merchants was postponed because the Toronto Blue Jays were playing Los Angeles in Game 7 of the World Series.

Friday's 9-2 victory came at the expense of the floundering Caledon Golden Hawks, who have not won a game so far this season. The outcome was never in doubt as the Bruins scored four goals in the first seven minutes.

Newcomer Jordan Fitger opened the scoring just 15 seconds after the opening whistle. Three minutes later, Jack Kemp scored, quickly followed by Fitger's second goal on a soft blue line shot. Then Tucker Roberts made it 4-0 before the midway mark of the first period. Fitger notched the hat-trick as the period wound down.

In the second period, with call-up Carter Crossen taking over net-minding duties for the Bruins, Liam Peterson one-timed a cross-ice pass from the blue line, followed a couple of minutes later by Tanner Ryan's goal.

The Golden Hawks finally found the mark early in the third period, but Nolan Winter responded with Uxbridge's eighth goal. Caledon scored a second goal on a breakaway, but, once again, the Bruins came back with the final goal of the game.

The Bruins outshot Caledon 53-17 and just about every player on the Bruins' squad scored a point in the game. As for Caledon, the Golden Hawks were seven players short on the bench.

The Cosmos selected Fitger as the Bruins' player of the game, while giving the nod to Josiah Dunkley of the Golden Hawks.

The Jays and Game 6 of the World Series also affected Friday's game. Audience attendance was down to about 95, much lower than the usual 300 or so.

The Bruins return to action tonight (Thursday) when they travel to Schomberg to take on the Cougars and then return to the arena on Friday at 7:45 p.m. to host the Georgina Ice. This will be the second time this season the Bruins have taken on the second-place Ice.
