Election nominations coming down to wire

Anyone thinking about entering this Fall's municipal election has little time to have their names entered on the ballot.

The last date to enter nomination papers is Aug. 21, no later than 2 p.m.

A new candidate, Alex Orr, recently entered his name into the mix, running in Ward 4 against incumbent Willie Popp. Three candidates have put their names forward for Durham District School Board school trustee: Paul Breeze, Dave Brown and Natalia Duboisky.

The election is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 26. Ahead of that time, the Cosmos will be holding two all-candidates meetings at the community centre. The first, featuring all those running for ward councillor, will be held Sept. 21, from 7 p.m. until close. The second, featuring mayoral candidates, regional councillor (if necessary) and school trustees, will run Sept. 28, same place, same time.

At this time, three candidates are running for the position of mayor, Bruce Garrod remains unopposed as regional councillor and nine are seeking to be ward councillors. Only one name has been put forward for Catholic board trustee and three are running as trustee for Durham District School Board.

There will be one more meeting of council on Sept. 15 and then council will be in recess until after the election.

Finally, voters are advised to make sure their names are on the voters list.
