Bruins devastate the lowly Golden Hawks
Roger Varley
In what was likely the most lop-sided victory in the PJHL this year, the Uxbridge Bruins shattered the visiting Caledon Golden Hawks 12-0 at the arena last Friday.
What eventually proved to be the winning goal came at the midway point of the first period when Jordan Bonner scored on a power-play, assisted by Jack Kemp and Ryan Shier. The Bruins scored three goals in the first period, five in the second and four in the third.
The Bruins' dominance was starkly illustrated by the shots on goal: Uxbridge launched a total of 70 shots at Caledon's two goalies (the starting goalie was replaced five minutes into the second period) while the Golden Hawks managed only 11 shots on Uxbridge goalie Robbie DiMaria. The goal scoring was shared by 10 Bruins: Shier and Evan Gilbert each scored two while the other markers came from Bonner, Benson Moore, Luke Kemp, Jack Kemp, Darin Bain, Colin Glecoff, Tyson Lotton and Tanner Ryan.
The Cosmos selected Moore as player of the game for the Bruins and picked Arunas Scott for Caledon.
The scoring spree did not follow the Bruins to Georgina the following night, where the Ice edged Uxbridge 2-1. Georgina scored their first goal midway through the first and followed that with a short-handed goal less than a minute into the second period. Luke Kemp narrowed the gap on a power play as the period wound down, assisted by Gilbert and Shier. However, that's where the scoring ended.
As a result, the Bruins are now only two points ahead of Georgina in the standings, although they have a game in hand. With less than10 games remaining in the regular season, the lead in the Orr Division is coming down to a battle between Uxbridge and Georgina. Battling it out for third place are the Port Perry LumberJacks and the Clarington Eagles, with the Little Britain Merchants nipping at their heels. The Schomberg Cougars and Caledon are deep in the cellar, with Caledon having won only two games so far this season.
The Bruins have a busy schedule ahead of them. Tomorrow (Friday) night, they host the Eagles at 7:45 p.m., followed by visits to Little Britain on Saturday and Caledon on Sunday. Then, next Thursday, the Bruins are on the road again to face the Cougars in Schomberg.
Bear pause: A reminder that the Bruins' Teddy Bear toss will return on Jan. 30. All the bears thrown on the ice will be donated to SickKids Hospital, along with the proceeds from that night's Chuck-a-Puck contest and the 50-50 draw. The Bruins ask that the bears be wrapped in clear plastic.
