Bruins breezing through playoffs' first round

In one of the most lop-sided results in the Provincial Junior Hockey League this year, including regular season and playoff games, the Uxbridge Bruins downed the lowly Caledon Golden Hawks 16-0 at the arena last Friday.

The win was not unexpected, given that the Caledon team was eight men short on the bench, meaning they only had two forward lines and two defensive units.

The Bruins scored four goals in the first period, six in the second and six in the third. In the process, they fired a total of 65 shots at Caledon's two goalies, while the Golden Hawks managed only 16 shots on the Bruns net. Almost every player in the Bruins lineup scored at least one point in the game, while Jordan Fitger, who the Cosmos selected as player of the game, tallied six points on the strength of three goals and three assists.

In the second game, held in Caledon on Sunday, the Bruins came away with a 6-2 victory, as the Golden Hawks were once again unable to put a full roster on the bench, being five men short this time.

Perhaps for the first time since play started last September, Caledon took the lead in the first period with a power-play goal just two minutes after the opening whistle. The Bruins responded 33 seconds later and went on to score three more in the period.

Caledon scored the only goal of the second period and the Bruins wrapped the game up with two more in the third.

Bruins goalie Kevin Halloran had an easy night, facing a total of only 12 shots, while the Bruins bombarded Caledon goal Max Zemp with 81 shots.

The two teams were scheduled to meet again at the arena on Tuesday night, with the fourth game, also to be held at the arena at 7:45 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) night.

In other first-round results, the Georgina Ice lead the Schomberg Cougars 2-0 and the Port Perry LumberJacks have a 2-0 lead on the Little Britain Merchants.
