Area aggregate pits win awards

Roger Varley, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

Two area aggregate pits received awards recently from the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association for their efforts at rehabilitation of their sites.

The 2025 Progressive Rehabilitation Award for land stewardship initiatives was awarded to CBM Aggregates for the rehabilitation of 3.7 hectares at their pit site in Sunderland. The rehabilitation included hydroseeding in the spring of 2025 with a mix of buckwheat, clover, tall fescue and annual rye.

The award also went to the Miller Group for the four hectare agricultural rehabilitation of their Boyington Pit 1 in Uxbridge. That included seeding in September with winter wheat at a ratio of 1,400,000 seeds per acre.
